How a Blue Lagoon Visit Works

From booking a timed slot to easing into the water — here's the flow so you know what to pack for.

  1. Choose Your Blue Lagoon Ticket

Pick the admission that suits you. Comfort includes lagoon access, the silica mud mask, a towel and a drink. Premium adds an extra mask, a robe and slippers, a sparkling-wine drink and a restaurant reservation. Both reach the same geothermal water.

  2. Reserve a Timed Entry Slot

The Blue Lagoon uses pre-booked timed entry and regularly sells out, so choose your date and arrival window in advance. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit gives you flexibility if plans change.

  3. Book the Official Ticket Online

Reserve through GetYourGuide — the admission is sold by Blue Lagoon Iceland, the official operator. You get instant confirmation by email and a mobile voucher to scan at the door.

  4. Travel & Ease Into the Water

The lagoon is about a 20-minute drive from Keflavík Airport and roughly 45 minutes from Reykjavík; transfer tickets are available if you'd rather not drive. Check in with your voucher, then soak, mask and relax at the in-water bar. Note: access can be affected by volcanic activity near Grindavík — check the operator's current status before you travel.

What to Bring to the Blue Lagoon

The short list of what you actually need, the hair rule, and what to leave at the hotel.

The honest answer to what to bring to the Blue Lagoon is: surprisingly little. Your Comfort admission already includes a towel, the signature silica mud mask and a drink, and there are showers, lockers and changing rooms on site. So the real packing list is short — a swimsuit, something for your hair, and a couple of small extras. The thing to get right isn’t what you pack; it’s the one rule below.

The one rule everyone forgets: protect your hair

The Blue Lagoon’s water is rich in silica, and silica is brutal on hair — it leaves it dry, stiff and straw-like for days if you let it soak in. So before you get in: tie your hair up, and coat it generously with conditioner (leave it in — don’t rinse). Conditioner is provided in the showers, but bringing a small tube of your own, or a leave-in, is the move. Keep your head and hair out of the water as much as you can. This single habit is the difference between a great visit and a week of regret.

What’s provided vs what to bring

  • Already included (Comfort): entry, the silica mud mask, a towel, and one drink. Showers, lockers and changing rooms are on site, and there’s conditioner in the showers.
  • Premium adds: a bathrobe, slippers, a second mask and a sparkling-wine drink — so with Premium you can pack even lighter.
  • Bring yourself: a swimsuit (worn under your clothes saves time), leave-in conditioner for your hair, and — if you want photos in the water — a waterproof phone case.
  • Optional but nice: flip-flops for the walk between changing rooms and the lagoon (not required — the floors are fine — but some prefer them), and a hair tie.

What to wear — and what to leave home

Wear a swimsuit; that’s the dress code, the same as any geothermal spa. The one thing to leave at the hotel is silver jewellery — the mineral-rich water can tarnish silver, so take rings, necklaces and watches off before you go in. Glasses are fine to wear; if you have contact lenses, keep your face out of the water or your eyes closed when you dip.

Phones, valuables and getting photos

Lockers are provided for valuables, so you don’t need to carry anything in. If you want the classic mud-mask-in-the-water photo, a waterproof case (or a waterproof phone pouch) is the safest way to bring your phone to the water’s edge — the silica and steam aren’t kind to electronics.

That’s genuinely it. Sort your hair, pack a swimsuit, leave the silver behind — everything else is already waiting for you. Next, see exactly what the ticket costs and what each tier includes, or read the full Blue Lagoon admission guide.

What Visitors Say

5/5 from 5804 verified visitors

"I originally booked to go as early in the morning as I could, however due to the snow impacting my plans I changed to a later booking and went at the end of the day. The staff were so helpful with arranging this for me. And I’m so glad I did it this way! I saw the blue lagoon in the daylight with the beautiful creamy blue water, then witnessed sunset and enjoyed time surrounded by the dark, starry night sky as well. As it got later the steam got better and better which was great. I really enjoyed the whole experience! I just wish it had been more obvious that the cocktail slushy I ordered (thinking it was my free drink) was in fact an ‘upgrade’ with an additional cost."

Rebecca United Kingdom

"Perfect! one of the best things we did. We got there at 1PM and it was the best decision. When we left around 4PM the lagoon was full and less chill than when we arrived."

Giovanna Germany

"It was a great experience. The place looks recently renovated and we loved it."

Athanasia Greece

"Being in blue lagoon was a life time experience. Totally recommended ❤️"

Kelli Greece

"Blue Lagoon is a must when visiting Iceland. The staff were really nice and everything was very clean. We stoped by right after our arrival and watched the sunrise from the lagoon. The whole experience was very relaxing!"
