"I originally booked to go as early in the morning as I could, however due to the snow impacting my plans I changed to a later booking and went at the end of the day. The staff were so helpful with arranging this for me. And I’m so glad I did it this way! I saw the blue lagoon in the daylight with the beautiful creamy blue water, then witnessed sunset and enjoyed time surrounded by the dark, starry night sky as well. As it got later the steam got better and better which was great. I really enjoyed the whole experience! I just wish it had been more obvious that the cocktail slushy I ordered (thinking it was my free drink) was in fact an ‘upgrade’ with an additional cost."

Blue Lagoon vs Sky Lagoon
Location, price, the experience, and a clear 'choose this if…' verdict.
Both the Blue Lagoon and the Sky Lagoon are genuinely world-class, and you won’t have a bad time at either — so the honest answer to “which is better” is it depends on your trip. The choice really comes down to three things: where you’re staying, how much you want to spend, and which kind of experience you’re after. Quick version: Blue Lagoon is the iconic, bucket-list one and the easy choice on an airport day; Sky Lagoon is closer to the city, a bit cheaper, and built around an ocean view and a sauna ritual.

Location & getting there
This is often the deciding factor. Sky Lagoon is on the edge of Reykjavík — about 10–15 minutes from the city centre, easy without a car. Blue Lagoon is out on the Reykjanes Peninsula, roughly 20 minutes from Keflavík Airport and 45 minutes from Reykjavík — which makes it the natural stop on the way to or from your flight, but a longer trip if you’re staying in town. The two lagoons are about 45–50 minutes apart, so doing both in one trip is very doable. See exactly where each sits relative to the airport and the city on our Sky Lagoon vs Blue Lagoon map.
The experience
They look and feel different. Blue Lagoon is the postcard: opaque, milky silica-blue water steaming over black lava, with the famous silica mud mask you smear on while you soak — bigger, more iconic, and busier. Sky Lagoon trades the lava field for the sea: a clear-water infinity edge facing the Atlantic, and its signature seven-step Skjól sauna ritual (warm lagoon → cold plunge → sauna → steam and more) — newer, sleeker, and built around that ocean view.
Price
Sky Lagoon is the cheaper entry: its Saman pass starts around $116, against Blue Lagoon’s Comfort at about $145. Step up and the gap narrows — Sky’s private-changing Sér vs Blue’s Premium (from ~$168). Both run demand-based, timed entry, so off-peak slots are lower on either side. For the full Blue Lagoon breakdown, see what the Blue Lagoon costs.
Which should you choose?
One more honest note: access to the Blue Lagoon can occasionally be affected by volcanic activity near Grindavík, while Sky Lagoon, right by the city, isn’t — so if you want certainty around a fixed date, that’s a point for Sky. And if your schedule allows, the genuinely best answer is often both: they’re close, they’re different, and together they make a great geothermal day. Which to choose, the price gap, and whether to do both.
Neither is simply 'better' — they suit different trips. Blue Lagoon is the iconic, bucket-list spa with the silica mud mask and milky-blue water, and it's the easy choice on an airport day. Sky Lagoon is closer to Reykjavík, a bit cheaper, and built around an ocean infinity edge and a seven-step sauna ritual. Pick by your base, budget and the experience you want.
Sky Lagoon is the cheaper entry — its Saman pass starts around $116, against Blue Lagoon's Comfort at about $145. The gap narrows at the higher tiers (Sky's Sér vs Blue's Premium). Both use demand-based pricing, so quieter slots cost less on either side.
About 45–50 minutes apart by car. Sky Lagoon is on the edge of Reykjavík; Blue Lagoon is out on the Reykjanes Peninsula near Keflavík Airport. They're close enough that visiting both in one trip is very doable.
The Blue Lagoon is the most famous and the one most people mean by 'the Icelandic lagoon,' but Sky Lagoon's oceanfront setting and ritual win plenty of fans, and there are quieter local pools too. For a first visit the Blue Lagoon is the signature choice; for value and an ocean view, Sky Lagoon.
If it's your first trip and you want the iconic experience — the silica mud mask, the milky-blue water — choose Blue Lagoon, especially if you can fit it around your airport transfer. If you're based in Reykjavík without a car, or want to spend less and prefer an ocean view, choose Sky Lagoon.
Yes, and many people do — they're only about 45–50 minutes apart and are different enough to be worth it. Space them out (they're both relaxing rather than rushed), and book timed slots for each in advance.
Setting and signature. Blue Lagoon is opaque, silica-rich water in a black lava field, with the silica mud mask; Sky Lagoon is clearer water with an Atlantic infinity edge and a seven-step Skjól ritual. Blue Lagoon is the original and is near the airport; Sky Lagoon is newer and on the edge of Reykjavík.
