What the Blue Lagoon Does for Your Skin

The actives in the water, the psoriasis connection, and the honest caveat about drying.

Is the Blue Lagoon good for your skin? For most people, yes — and not just as marketing. The milky geothermal seawater is naturally rich in silica, minerals and algae, a combination with a genuine, long-standing association with skin health. The Blue Lagoon even runs a clinic that treats psoriasis with this water. But there’s one honest caveat about drying, below — so here’s the full picture.

What’s actually in the water

Three naturally occurring actives do the work, and they’re the same ingredients the Blue Lagoon’s skincare line is built from:

  • Silica — forms the soft white mud you smear on as the signature mask. It’s cleansing and gently exfoliating, and leaves skin feeling smooth and refreshed (it’s also why the water looks milky-blue).
  • Minerals — the seawater is mineral-dense, which is the part most associated with soothing and conditioning the skin.
  • Algae — the microalgae that thrive in the warm geothermal water are credited with nourishing, antioxidant-style benefits and feature heavily in the brand’s products.

The psoriasis and eczema connection

The Blue Lagoon’s reputation isn’t only anecdotal: the geothermal seawater has been used clinically for psoriasis, and Blue Lagoon operates a dedicated treatment program around it. Many visitors with psoriasis or eczema report that the water soothes and calms their skin, and some plan trips specifically for it. That said, this is a place to be straight with you: it isn’t a cure, results vary from person to person, and if you’re managing a skin condition you should treat a visit as a complement to — not a replacement for — your doctor’s advice.

Does the Blue Lagoon dry out your skin?

For some people, yes — a little. The same mineral-rich, silica-laden water that’s so good for many skins can feel drying for others, and it’s notoriously hard on hair (tie it up and condition it before you get in). The fix is simple: rinse off and moisturise after your soak, and don’t overdo your time if your skin runs dry. The silica mud mask itself is cleansing rather than drying, so most people leave feeling smoother, not tighter.

The Blue Lagoon skincare line

If the water works for you, the Blue Lagoon skincare range bottles the same silica, mineral and algae actives to use at home — the in-water mask bar and the shop let you try before you buy. Worth it for some skins, a nice souvenir for others; either way, the water itself is the main event.

Want to experience it? The silica mud mask is included in every ticket — check live availability and prices, see what each tier costs, or read the full Blue Lagoon admission guide.

What Visitors Say

5/5 from 5804 verified visitors

"I originally booked to go as early in the morning as I could, however due to the snow impacting my plans I changed to a later booking and went at the end of the day. The staff were so helpful with arranging this for me. And I’m so glad I did it this way! I saw the blue lagoon in the daylight with the beautiful creamy blue water, then witnessed sunset and enjoyed time surrounded by the dark, starry night sky as well. As it got later the steam got better and better which was great. I really enjoyed the whole experience! I just wish it had been more obvious that the cocktail slushy I ordered (thinking it was my free drink) was in fact an ‘upgrade’ with an additional cost."

Rebecca United Kingdom

"Perfect! one of the best things we did. We got there at 1PM and it was the best decision. When we left around 4PM the lagoon was full and less chill than when we arrived."

Giovanna Germany

"It was a great experience. The place looks recently renovated and we loved it."

Athanasia Greece

"Being in blue lagoon was a life time experience. Totally recommended ❤️"

Kelli Greece

"Blue Lagoon is a must when visiting Iceland. The staff were really nice and everything was very clean. We stoped by right after our arrival and watched the sunrise from the lagoon. The whole experience was very relaxing!"
