Blue Lagoon Opening Hours — and the Best Time to Go

The Blue Lagoon's hours shift with the season, and it runs on pre-booked, timed entry — so the question that really matters isn't just when it's open, but which slot to book. Early morning and late evening are the quietest and often the cheapest; midday is the busy, pricey crush. Here's how the hours work and when to go.

  • Relax in the Blue Lagoon’s mineral-rich warmth
  • Explore the mask bar and swim-up bar, or book in-water treatments

Booking the Right Time Slot

From picking a quiet window to easing into the water — here's the flow.

  1. Choose Your Blue Lagoon Ticket

Pick the admission that suits you. Comfort includes lagoon access, the silica mud mask, a towel and a drink. Premium adds an extra mask, a robe and slippers, a sparkling-wine drink and a restaurant reservation. Both reach the same geothermal water.

  2. Reserve a Timed Entry Slot

The Blue Lagoon uses pre-booked timed entry and regularly sells out, so choose your date and arrival window in advance. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit gives you flexibility if plans change.

  3. Book the Official Ticket Online

Reserve through GetYourGuide — the admission is sold by Blue Lagoon Iceland, the official operator. You get instant confirmation by email and a mobile voucher to scan at the door.

  4. Travel & Ease Into the Water

The lagoon is about a 20-minute drive from Keflavík Airport and roughly 45 minutes from Reykjavík; transfer tickets are available if you'd rather not drive. Check in with your voucher, then soak, mask and relax at the in-water bar. Note: access can be affected by volcanic activity near Grindavík — check the operator's current status before you travel.

Opening Hours & the Best Time to Visit

The seasonal hours, the quietest slots, how long to stay, and why you book ahead.

The Blue Lagoon’s opening hours change with the season, and — this is the part that matters — it runs entirely on pre-booked, timed entry. So the real question isn’t only “when is it open,” it’s “which slot should I book.” Below are the hours in broad strokes and, more usefully, the times actually worth booking.

Blue Lagoon opening hours, by season

Hours vary through the year, so always confirm your exact date in the booking calendar — but broadly: the lagoon opens around 8am and closes between roughly 9pm and 10pm, with longer hours in summer and shorter ones in winter. Last admission is well before closing, since you need time in the water after you enter. There is no 24-hour access — and no reliable walk-up, because entry is capped and timed.

The best time to visit

Because the price and the crowd both move with the slot, the time you choose is the single biggest lever on your visit:

  • Early morning (first slots, ~8–9am) — the quietest water of the day and frequently the lowest price. You get the lagoon close to empty before the tour buses arrive.
  • Late evening — also quiet and often cheaper, with the bonus of long, golden summer light (near-midnight sun in June–July) or, in winter, a chance of northern lights overhead while you soak.
  • Midday to mid-afternoon — the busiest and most expensive window, when day-trippers and airport stop-overs converge. Avoid it if you can.
  • Straight from the airport — the lagoon is ~20 minutes from Keflavík, so an early slot on arrival or a late one before departure is both convenient and usually well-priced.

How long should you stay?

Plan for about 1.5 to 2.5 hours. You book a timed arrival window, not a fixed exit time, so once you’re in you can soak, do the mask bar and stop at the in-water bar at your own pace — there’s no countdown pushing you out.

Why you book ahead

Timed entry plus capped capacity means popular slots — summer, midday, weekends — sell out, sometimes days in advance. There’s no dependable walk-up. Pick your date and window early, both to get in at all and to land the quieter, cheaper times before they go.

What Visitors Say

5/5 from 5804 verified visitors

"I originally booked to go as early in the morning as I could, however due to the snow impacting my plans I changed to a later booking and went at the end of the day. The staff were so helpful with arranging this for me. And I’m so glad I did it this way! I saw the blue lagoon in the daylight with the beautiful creamy blue water, then witnessed sunset and enjoyed time surrounded by the dark, starry night sky as well. As it got later the steam got better and better which was great. I really enjoyed the whole experience! I just wish it had been more obvious that the cocktail slushy I ordered (thinking it was my free drink) was in fact an ‘upgrade’ with an additional cost."

Rebecca United Kingdom

"Perfect! one of the best things we did. We got there at 1PM and it was the best decision. When we left around 4PM the lagoon was full and less chill than when we arrived."

Giovanna Germany

"It was a great experience. The place looks recently renovated and we loved it."

Athanasia Greece

"Being in blue lagoon was a life time experience. Totally recommended ❤️"

Kelli Greece

"Blue Lagoon is a must when visiting Iceland. The staff were really nice and everything was very clean. We stoped by right after our arrival and watched the sunrise from the lagoon. The whole experience was very relaxing!"
